3820 Residence
The 3820 Residence is a classic Chicago 2-flat, deconverted to create a contemporary single-family home. The clients wanted to replace the confined, separated spaces with a free-flowing open floor plan. The solution was to remove all partitions from the first floor, with main spaces defined by custom millwork rather than walls. Several new window openings were made throughout the home to bring in natural light and emphasize key elements such as the fireplace, dining nook and staircase. The angled side bay, characteristic of many masonry 2-flats, is occupied by a showstopping custom stair featuring a custom-built steel stringer, supporting thin cantilevered wooden treads and further accentuated by a cascading chandelier. To augment the existing building, a rear addition opens to the backyard via an oversized glass door, while a walkway links the main house to the newly constructed garage. On the upper floor, the master suite was enhanced with a large window that nearly occupies the entire rear wall. Traditional materials of wood & stone throughout the home are kept fresh with contrasting finishes and well-placed lighting. Through the removal of formal separations, the introduction of natural light, and well-chosen finishes, the original cramped feel of building was replaced with an airy, spacious atmosphere.
